Interest and/or practice of interdisciplinarity:
My main research interest lies in the interaction between person and environment and effects on physical and mental health, including health behaviors. This implies studying the health effects of factors in physical and social environment as well as the environmental requirements for healthy living in different societal and age groups. Susceptible groups for environmental hazards belong to my field of specific interest and in particular life course based groups: healthy active ageing and the development of (young) children and effects of early exposures on health status later on in life. This interest is reflected in my conceptual as well as research work.
Currently I am working at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in the Netherlands and since 2011 I am a part-time visiting researcher at the University of Gothenburg (Dept. of Occupational and Environmental Medicine of the school for Public Health and Community Medicine). I have a background in Psychology, Sociology and Epidemiology and have worked at the crossroad of environmental psychology and health psychology during my whole career, first at the University of Groningen, later as epidemiologist at a Municipal Health Service and since 2000 at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.
